My dad Joseph Tohill was a very good Gaelic football player. I remember going on several bus trips in the mid 1950''''s, leaving from Rasharkin. We lived close by and often went to St. Mary''''s church.

Have a look at this! do we fit into this
Are we getting it right at under-age level?
Over the past number of days I have been talking to a number of people whom are very concerned about underage development, including a very senior Official in Croke Park. As I have already mentioned in posts regarding underage coaching I have been incredibly alarmed by the lack of Fundamental movement skills a lot of children are displaying. I can't but wonder what is the cause for this? I know straight away people will say that society has changed and children are inside watching telly or playing on computers nowadays. This is true to some extent but doesn't that mean then that there is a greater need then for our coaches and teachers to develop the children's Fundamental Movements?

Unfortunately I have come to the conclusion that too many underage clubs are getting it wrong and becoming skill specific at too young an age. Ask yourself the following questions: Is it more important to coach a child to lift a ball or improve their balance? Is it more important that all children are included or that you win the game (even if it is a challenge match)? I heard a story about 2 weeks ago where 2 children were left on the sideline during an Under 14 challenge match because their trainer said, "We want to win this one."

I was speaking to one of the children's parents and they told me they really had to persuade the child to continue with the sport. I am sure this is not an isolated incident. I am repeatedly told that training sessions still consist in many places of a warm-up which involves running in and out to the 14, 21 and 45 before doing drills that lots of children mess around in because they have done them so many times and don't know why they are doing them and then into a game situation. If I have just described your training session then I am afraid you're doing something wrong. These were the types of training sessions I had in the 80's and of our Under 12 team that won county final at least 8 of them had well and truly retired from football by the time they were 21.

It is crucial to get the underage structure right and then your adult teams will benefit down the line (Look at the Dublin footballers). It baffles me when I hear how much clubs spend on getting outside trainers in. We all know it happens in many clubs and can cost £5,000 and above. Would it not make more sense to get all the underage coaches coached and educated in how to develop children? Many of the coaches are volunteers and have no or limited understanding of how children develop and surely this is paramount. This is what will ultimately determine whether children will maximise their potential and more importantly continue to play. We are losing children daily down to a lack of understanding of the child and how they work. I have mentioned before that a child may have the chronological age of 14, the physical age of 17 but the emotional age of a 12 year old. A Coach must understand and cater for this and if you go hard on a child just because he or she looks mature you could be giving them all the encouragement they need to quit.

I will leave you with a couple more questions to help you make your mind up about whether your club has it right. Again I would like to say that I know there are MANY CLUBS and MANY COACHES who are doing brilliantly but if there is even 1 club or coach not getting it right that is still too many:

Do you expect all the children in your session to be able to perform the same tasks in drills?
Do you make sessions fun?
Do you plan your session in advance or on you way in the car?
Is there a particular reason why you are doing the drills you have chosen?
Do you include Fundamentals of Movement?
Is every child involved? Is every child happy?
Do you always play the same children in the same position?
Is their progression in the drills you choose? Do you have more challenging drills for the more talented players?
Do you give the players feedback at the end of a session to let them know how they are doing?
Do you know how to get the most out of the players?
Would you like to have been coached by someone like yourself?
Are you 100% confident in what you are doing?
Do you think you are getting it right?
