Feile round 1 Creggan vs Rasharkin 2.3.14

Rasharkin travelled to Creggan in the first round of the Feile competition knowing they would be seen as underdogs for this game. The wet and windy conditions were not conducive to good football and Creggan, having won the toss, elected to play with the breeze.  The Sharks started strong and within two mins, an excellent run by Callum Scullion, resulted in a goal. Creggan hit back immediately with a point by McIlvar who was looking very lively on the 40. The strong breeze mad it difficult for keeper Tiernan O’Boyle to get length in his kick outs, but his short kick outs to secure possession against the breeze were working well, and sharkins short passing and running game were ideal tactics against the wind. A goal by half forward Tom McIvor opened up a gap with the hosts, but Creggan struck back with points from McIlvar and Maguire. Creggan seemed to be getting more into the game now but their full forward line got no change from the Dreen full back line of Rory Kelly, Ruairi O’Boyle and Gerard Kelly. A pointed free by Cathair Henderson was followed by some great interplay involving Colm Kennedy, Calum Condron and Odhran McGarrell with the latter stroking the ball over the bar. McIlvar pointed a free just before half time to leave the score at the break Creggan 0-4 Rasharkin 2-2

The back lash from the shell shocked Creggan lads never materialised in the second half and with Scullion and Henderson completely dominant at centre field the lough shore men couldn’t get a foot hold in the game at all. Calum Condron grew into the task on McIlvar , keeping the Creggan man to only a single point in the second half. Goals from McIvor, Henderson and Scullion completely killed off the home team though they did score a consolation goal near the end. The effervescent Chris McNally topped a great performance with a point near the end. Aidan McFerran and Ethan McMullan forced numerous turnovers with their tackling and from one of these Ryan McKenna sent a great through ball to Liam Quigg who found the on running Henderson free inside the 14 and he duly dispatched to the net to round off a fine performance.

Final Score Creggan 1-4 Rasharkin 7-10

An excellent performance by our team who have improved dramatically over the last year. They will need to be at their best though against neighbours Sean Stinsons in round two.
