St Marys Man To Become Ulster GAA President
26th January 2016

St.Mary’s GAC Rasharkin are proud to announce Michael J Hasson will be unveiled as the 35th Ulster GAA President on Saturday 30th January at Ulster Convention in Owenbeg. This is a tremendous honour for Michael, and ultimately a very fitting tribute for him, who has devoted much of his life to the Gaelic Athletic Association. Remarkably, Michael bridges a sixty five year gap becoming the 6th Antrim delegate to hold position of President, the last was Belfast Gael Seamus McFerran back in 1951.

Michael, a lifelong Gael, has always represented his beloved Naomh Muire with distinction, a former player and club referee for over twenty five years, who officiated up to Senior Championship level. A club committee member since 1965, he was elected to represent Rasharkin at South-West Committee in 1967, a position he would hold for a further thirty years. During this time Michael progressed to represent the Division at County Committee. In 1997 he was elected Antrim Delegate to Ulster, becoming the first person from the club to sit on a Provincial Council. His ability was recognised at this forum notably as fixtures secretary for Ulster Feile and on the Code of Ethics programme. In 2007 he became the first Antrim man to be elected Ulster Council PRO, this was his first step to becoming an officer of the Council. He has taken the hard road to his Presidency holding further positions as Treasurer and Vice President.

Michael has presided very efficiently over many sub-committees and activities within the Council and his work ethic results in him having very little free time. He has also sat on Committees in Croke Park. This is a reflection of the esteem Michael is held within Club, County, Province and at National level.

In GAA circles Michael Hasson is renowned as a modest gentleman with great creditability and is unarguably one of the most valued members Rasharkin has ever produced. To achieve this goal of becoming Uachtarán Chomhairle Uladh is just reward for his capabilities and dedication to the Association

This is a great accolade for Michael, his family and our club, Naomh Muire Ros Earcain congratulate him and wish him every success in his new position.
